How to clean your Top-Load Washing machine at Home:
Let us have a look at some essential tips to maintain a washing machine.
A Top-Load Washing Machine cleans your clothes thoroughly and saves your time. But
do you ever give it a thorough clean up? Clean your washing machine is mandatory to keep it functioning at its highest
potential. By ensuring it’s clean, you are ensuring your clothes to be clean
too.
Why is it Important to clean your top load Washing Machine
If your laundry has started smelling musty or if your clothes are coming out dirty after wash, it is time to wash your washing machine. Yes, it needs cleaning too. Ideally, you must wash your washing machine at least once a month. This is because the residues of laundry detergents and fabric softener form a layer of gunk in the wash drum. Trapped moisture leads to the growth of mould and mildew. This layer of dirt can create bacteria too. Furthermore, if kept unclean, this condition can trigger unpleasant odours too. Don’t worry, if you have noticed any of these points with your washing machine, it’s time to give it a deep-clean. We are here to simplify the task for you.

1.
Step 1: Run a Wash Cycle
Start by running a hot cycle with the machine empty to remove any powder detergent particles that are left behind in the machine. While running your regular cycle, we recommend using a liquid detergent. If you are using a top load washing machine, you can use Surf Excel Matic Liquid Top Load, which is specially formulated for top load washing machines. It leaves no residue (like powders do) as being a liquid it dissolves completely in water. Check the pack to understand correct usage instructions.
2.
Step 2: Add Vinegar
Vinegar helps break stubborn dirt and cleanses the surface thoroughly. Fill the machine drum to 2/3rd of its capacity with water and add 1 cup of vinegar to it. Let the vinegar solution sit in the machine for an hour. Keep the lid of the machine open during this duration.
3.
Step 3: Wash the Detergent Trays and Lint Filter
Detergent tray retains the detergent
residue. It builds up over time and becomes sticky. It also gives us unpleasant
odour sometimes. Remove the detergent dispenser panel. Wash the detergent and
fabric softener trays with warm water and dishwashing liquid. You can try Vim
Dishwash Gel. It is easily available in the market.
It is also important to wash lint filter. A lint filter is a small mesh filter which catches lint during the wash. Lint means small fibres which come out from the surface of clothing during wash. Check the product manual of your washing machine to check if your lint filter is removable. If yes, remove it by following the instructions mentioned and clean it. You can use a paper towel and an old toothbrush to clean the lint thoroughly. Then, soak it in a solution of hot water mixed with 1 tsp. of dishwashing liquid for 50-60 minutes. It helps removing the dirt thoroughly. Then give it a final rinse with plain water and attach it back. If your lint filter is not removable, you may seek professional help for this. You can clean your lint filter once in 2 months.
4.
Step 4: Wipe Clean the Machine
Use a commercial cleaner to wipe the exteriors of your top-loading washing machine with a lint-free cotton rag or a microfibre cloth. Check the pack to understand the correct usage instructions. And always test on a small part to check compatibility. Use an old toothbrush to remove debris of dirt stuck on the corners. Wipe the settings panel and the insides of the lid properly.
5.
Step 5: Start the Wash Cycle
Set the wash cycle on the highest temperature for the longest duration. Run an empty load.
6.
Step 6: Run a Wash Cycle with Baking Soda
Baking soda contains mild alkali which helps dirt and grease to dissolve in water and clean away effectively. Run another wash cycle using 1 cup baking soda to remove vinegar residue and clean the machine drum thoroughly.
7.
Step 7: Wipe the Machine Drum
Once the water has drained, wipe the drum dry using a clean cotton cloth.
8.
Step 8: Clean the Drain Pipe
The drain pipe of your washing
machine gets clogged over a period of time. To clean your drain pipe, we
suggest you check the product manual to understand the right way of cleaning
it. You can also seek professional help for this step.
Maintain your
washing machine
To keep your washing machine clean, make sure you take out your laundry as soon as it is washed. Also, keep the door of your washing machine open for 10-15 minutes every day after the wash cycle. When you allow air-circulation the moisture does not get trapped and prevents unpleasant odours and mould. Always wipe the drum and detergent dispenser with a cotton cloth atleast once a week. It is a good prevention method.
And there you go!
